Starting today, enhanced road safety measures are coming into effect, including more police patrols and surveillance cameras. Special attention will be given to guardrails and roundabouts.
These new measures follow shortly after Bulgaria once again topped the grim EU ranking for the highest number of road traffic fatalities.
Legislative changes are also expected, aimed at tightening control over drivers who get behind the wheel under the influence of drugs. Discussions are ongoing about removing warning signs placed before mobile speed cameras.
Another idea under consideration is the deployment of unmarked police vehicles to monitor and record traffic violations. Authorities are also considering removing some speed limit signs on highways.
Insurers are also joining the fight against traffic offenders by raising the premiums of mandatory third-party liability (MTPL) insurance for high-risk drivers.
