Australian Finance Minister Joe Hockey has warned that Australia risks facing a forced shutdown of the administration, as happened with the United States this fall if the opposition refuses to raise the debt ceiling, AFP reported.
Australia's debt ceiling is currently A $ 300 million (€ 208 million) and will be reached on December 12, the new Conservative government's finance ministry said. The House of Commons voted to raise the debt ceiling on Wednesday night, but the decision was blocked by the Senate.
Liberals and Greens agree to raise the debt to A $ 400 million, which has been described as insufficient by Tony Abbott's government.
The Australian Ministry of Finance accused the opposition of "playing Russian roulette". In response, opposition spokesman Chris Bowen recalled that one of the promises that Abbot's Conservatives came to power with was to reduce debt.
