After experts from the German organization ADAC found a vulnerability of the new BMWs in the multimedia system, the Bavarian concern reacted quickly. The headquarters of the premium brand explained that in terms of security, the problem was related to the transmission of information via a mobile network, but the hardware of the BMW Group is not affected by the problem. Thanks to the online capabilities of the BMW Group ConnectedDrive, the leak was removed quickly and safely in absolutely all cars.
Now access to important driving functions is completely excluded, and the more important thing owners need to know is that a visit to the services of the brand is not necessary. The update is performed automatically when the vehicle connects to the BMW Group server or the driver manually activates the service configuration. The BMW Group ConnectedDrive online services communicate with this configuration via the HTTPS protocol (HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure), which has previously been used in the BMW Internet service.
In this way, the services of the BMW Group ConnectedDrive in the car use encryption, which in most cases is also used by financial institutions in online banking. The HTTPS protocol encrypts the data and identifies the BMW Group's server from the vehicle before the data can be transferred via the mobile network. Thus, by eliminating the problem, the BMW Group promptly increased the security of ConnectedDrive. To date, there are no known cases of unauthorized access to a BMW car through the ConnectedDrive system.
