Adata Island on the Maritsa River became the first private island in Bulgaria. This follows from the decision of the Constitutional Court, Standart newspaper reports.

On Tuesday, he ruled that declaring the islands public in 2000 did not take away retroactively regaining ownership. So from now on this type of land can now be private.

The decision puts an end to long-standing disputes between the state and the heirs of Plovdiv banker Konstantin Hadjikalchev.

The case was initiated at the request of the Civil Collegium of the Supreme Court of Cassation. The lands on the island were in the time of Hadjikalchev. Adata was even known as "Kalchev Island". Then the lands were nationalized.

25 years ago the island was given to the management of the Plovdiv Fair. In 1999 it was restituted.
