President Zhelyu Zhelev (head of state 1990-1997) died at the age of 79.
Zhelyu Zhelev was the first democratically elected president after the changes of November 10, 1989. He was also among the founders of the UDF. Only three days ago he participated in the Council of Presidents together with Rosen Plevneliev, Petar Stoyanov and Georgi Parvanov.
The sad news was spread by several Bulgarian media, referring to relatives of the family.
Following the adoption of the Constitution on July 12, 1990, on August 1, 1990, Dr. Zhelyu Zhelev was elected President.
He was born on March 3, 1935 in the village of Veselinovo, Shoumen District. He graduated in philosophy at Sofia University in 1958. In the period 1961-1964 he was a full-time graduate student at the Faculty of Philosophy at Sofia University. In 1974 he defended his PhD and in 1988 his doctoral dissertation. In 1975 he started working at the Institute of Culture.
From 1977 to 1982 he was head of the "Culture and Personality" section at the same institute. He finished his book Fascism in 1967, but it was published 15 years later (1982). It was published in 10,000 copies by the Narodna Mladezh publishing house. Three weeks later, it was banned and withdrawn from bookstores because of similarities between the fascist dictatorship and the socialist state system. However, about 6,000 copies have already been sold.
In February 1990, the Federation of Clubs for Democracy was established with Petko Simeonov as chairman and an Operational Bureau consisting of Zhelyu Zhelev, Ivaylo Trifonov, Nikolay Matov, Georgi Drumev, Georgi Mishev, Dimitar Ludzhev, Blaga Dimitrova. Dr. Zhelev is a co-founder of the UDF. He was President of Bulgaria from 1990 to 1997. For the first term from 1990 to 1992 he was elected Speaker (President) of the National Assembly in place of the resigned Petar Mladenov. At his suggestion, Atanas Semerdzhiev was elected vice president.
On January 12-19, 1992, Dr. Zhelyu Zhelev won the direct presidential election. For the second term from 1992 to 1997, after legislative changes, he was elected president in a team with Vice President Blaga Dimitrova. He is chairman of the Balkan Political Club, founded on May 26th, 2001 on his idea. Presidents Ion Iliescu, Suleiman Demirel, Emil Constantinescu, Kiro Gligorov, political leaders from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Albania, Macedonia and Turkey took part in the constituent assembly under the motto "Europeanizing the Balkans".
