Are you about to register a car with the Traffic Police? That's all you need to know image

If you are buying an already registered car, within 2 weeks you must provide the Traffic Police with a copy of the sales contract with the seller's details. The Traffic Police issues a new registration certificate. If the registration of the car is in a city other than yours, when providing a copy of the contract to the Traffic Police, at a permanent address, you can change the number and register it in your city.

However, if the car is a new import, you must go through the whole procedure of vehicle registration:

When and where to register the car:

The car must be registered within 14 days of purchase, at the traffic police, at a permanent address.

Necessary documents:

  • written application for registration (there are forms on the spot, they are given ex officio);
  • documents for acquisition of ownership with data for identification of the vehicle (the contract and other documents that we have formed with the seller at the conclusion of the transaction);
  • identity document (eg ID card);
  • document for concluded Civil Liability Insurance;
  • a customs document for formalized importation into the territory of the European Union (EU), if the vehicle is imported from a country outside the EU;
  • documents in connection with the product tax (called ecotax), prepared and provided to me by the seller of the vehicle at the conclusion of the transaction.

Vehicle registration procedure:

  • a thorough technical inspection of the vehicle is performed by a specialist. If everything is OK, a report is drawn up;
  • I pay an ecotax;
  • submit the necessary documents;
  • you pay a fee, which is collected in the system of the Ministry of Interior under Tariff № 4 to the State Fees Act (BGN 6);
  • after paying this fee I am issued a registration certificate (large and small coupon);
  • you receive number plates. They shall be fixed at the front and rear (or only at the rear), perpendicular to the median longitudinal section of the vehicle and, where this is not possible, to the left so as to ensure their visibility and illumination at night. When affixing, the shape of the plate, the integrity of the graphic and the symbols of the numbers must not be disturbed. The installation costs about BGN 4.
